Obituary of Helen Irene Robinson

ROBINSON, Helen I. Scotsburn It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Helen Irene Robinson (Salter) 78 of Scotsburn. With family by her side, Helen left us peacefully while in the Intensive Care unit, Aberdeen Hospital, after a short illness. (24 March 1943 – 26 December 2021) Our mother, Helen, was one of the strongest, most selfless, bravest, and kindest women to ever walk this earth and our family was blessed to have her as the head of the family. Helen was born to Wilfred and Irene (Skerry) Salter of Union Centre. Helen attended and graduated from Westville High. After graduating, she went on to pursue a career as an RN, were she obtained her license from the Aberdeen School of Nursing in 1963. Helen had the honor of furthering her studies and helped spear head the first Intensive Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital. Helen and another colleague travelled to the USA to advance their nursing, in the studies of Intensive Care. Upon completion she returned to the Aberdeen and helped set-up, organize and trained others to open the new unit, where she worked for many years as the Head Nurse. Helen later changed her scope of work and specialized in the field of Drug Dependency Nurse Counsellor at Addiction Services in Pictou. She was very devoted to her Nursing Career and worked until the age of 70 years. She was a fiercely dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbor. Family came first and was above all else to Helen, a value she instilled in all those around her. She was a very devoted member of the Scotsburn Community. She held many positions over the years, President of the Ladies Aid through the Bethel Presbyterian Church, and President of the AMS to name a couple. She also volunteered for over 20 years with the Pictou North Colchester Exhibition, were she thoroughly enjoyed organizing the Queen Pageants, Little Miss Pageants, Scheduling events, Pancake Brunches, and Fundraising. Helen devoted herself to various other charities, fundraisers and family events as well. She was also known as the community nurse whenever there was a need or crises she was called upon to help out. She often said “I love taking care of people”. She enjoyed and took pride in entertaining many family, friends and guests at her kitchen table. She was an amazing cook, baker and maker of many new recipes. She was famous for her homemade Mac and Cheese (no other could compare). No one ever left her table feeling hungry. Famous words “what am I missing”, “have some more” and “take some home”. Helen was a perfectionist in every sense of the word, every event needed a plan and in order to plan she needed her clipboard handy. She loved to host, entertain, decorate and organize for all. She enjoyed many things in life: Painting, decorating, playing cards, evening jams at the West Branch Hall, Bon fires on a warm summer evening, and square dancing in her younger years. But most importantly the pride she had for her family, and especially her grandchildren, not a day passed that she didn’t share stories about them. The absence left by her, is impossible to fill. Helen is survived by her husband of 57 years, Johnny; sons, John (Virginia,) Scotsburn; Jason (Stacy), Alberta; grandchildren, Jamie Salter (Dave Conrad), Hopewell; Jessica Dignan (Alex), Westville; Aidan, Nicole and Mitchell Robinson, Alberta; sister, Violet Hughes (Lloyd), New Glasgow; brothers, Garnet Salter (Bonnie), Sussex, New Brunswick; Ron Salter (Myrna), Pleasant Valley; Henry Salter (Joanie), Riverton and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by son, Jonathan; sisters, Doris, Phyllis, Treva, Rose, Hazel and Joyce; brothers, Charles (Bud), Vernon, and Allison. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff at the Intensive Care Unit, Aberdeen Hospital for all their care and compassion during this difficult time, it will never be forgotten. A private family graveside service will be held in Bethel Cemetery, Scotsburn.
