BABINEAU, James Ronald “Mark” – It is with deep sadness friends and family announce his passing on November 5, 2021 at home, at age 93. Born in Pictou in 1928, Mark was predeceased by his parents, Mark and Agnes (Martell) Babineau. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Alphonse, Sgt. Vincent Mark (killed in WWII), Joe, Clarence; sisters, Donna (Harold) Smith, Margarette Joyce, Teresa. Mark loved his nieces, who also predeceased him, Kathleen Smith and Marjorie-Anne Smith, of Pictou/Halifax. He will be remembered by many nieces and nephews, Vincent (Pearl) Joyce; and sister-in-law, Barbara, wife of Alphonse. Special thanks to Robert and Patsy Landry, and Ronald MacDonald, for the continued and faithful support shown throughout the years. Mark was a Nova Scotia Hall of Famer, inducted into the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. He was another former athelete who gave back something to the game he loved, serving as Honorary Chairman of the Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame. Mark learned to skate on ponds, rivers and wherever ice could be found. He played Midget and Juvenile until Junior hockey. Mark was coached by the great Tic Williams. After Junior, he played with the Pictou Maripacs of the A.P.C. league, and was scouted by the New Haven Club, chosen to play for the New Haven Tomahawks of the Eastern Pro League. After hockey he returned to his Pictou, which he loved. He worked for Herbie Wisener at the Capitol Theater for several years, later joining the Town of Pictou Public Works Department as a dispatcher, retiring after 19 years service. Arrangements have been entrusted to McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Cremation has taken place and a Funeral Mass will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday from the Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou, with Father Peter MacDonald officiating.
