Obituary of Edward David Teiman

It is with great sadness that the family of Edward David Teiman, 90, of New Glasgow announce his passing on November 10th, 2018 at the Odd Fellows Home in Pictou, N.S.  Ted was born December 23, 1927 in London, England.  His mother, Millicent Sunderland, born in London, and his father, Haris Teiman, born in Glasgow, Scotland, had three sons.  Ted’s eldest brother, Al, was killed in North Africa in September 1942 during a tank battle at El Alamein.  His youngest brother, Martin, who still lives in England, was a telegraphist with the Royal Air Force, and later a Communications officer with the Minister of defence until he retired.  Ted was educated at the Dynevor Secondary School and Redcliffe Marine College, South Wales.  He left school to join the Norwegian Merchant Service where he served from 1940 to 1945.  Immediately following his Merchant Marine service, Ted travelled to Southern Rhodesia and became a Colonial police officer working for the British South African Police Force.  He served 5 years in that capacity and in 1950, Ted travelled to Canada to initially join the RCMP, however, upon arrival in Ottawa, he decided to join the RCAF instead.  He was sent out west to take his flight training, and he became a pilot flying T33’s and Harvards.  Later he flew Neptunes, Arguses and Lancasters.  His service included flying tours with the 404 Squadron in Greenwood, N.S. and the 415 Squadron in Summerside, P.E.I.  He was an instructor at Training Command in Winnipeg, Manitoba and he also served for four years in West Germany as the Canadian Air Group Senior Operations Officer at the Nato air bases in Lahr (One Wing) and Baden-Soellingen (Four Wing).  Prior to this European posting, he served for three years as the Commanding Officer at Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre in New Glasgow, responsible for recruiting Forces personnel in all of northern Nova Scotia.  He served with the RCAF from 1950 to 1972 and retired with the rank of Captain.  Ted and his family moved to New Glasgow, N.S. in 1972 when he became the News Director at the Radio Station CKEC.  He remained the Director for three years then left the radio station to become a Junior Partner of the Pictou Advocate.  He quickly became a Vice-President of Advocate Printing and Publishing Company and remained Senior Editor of the newspaper from 1975 to 1990 when he officially retired from the Pictou Advocate.  Even after his retirement from the paper, Ted continued to write a weekly column for the paper which remained popular for years.  In 1951, while continuing his flight training, Ted met his forever bride.  He proposed and married the love of his life, Catherine (Penny) Bertha Gwendyleen MacIntyre, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on October 10th, 1953. Together they had 3 children, Linda Diane (Lee), Timothy Christopher, and Catherine Frances Millicent.  All three children have since graduated from university, married and are living productive and happy lives.  Over the course of his lifetime, Ted exemplified community service.  He was a member of the New Glasgow Lions Club prior to his European Tour.  Ted was also a member of the Pictou Rotary Club where he served as both President and Bulletin Editor.  He was President of North Nova Branch, Federal Superannuates National Association (FESSNA) for 15 years.  This is a national organization of federal pensioners, and he oversaw the local three counties branches of Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough.  Ted was the Public Relations Director for the Monarchist League of Canada (Pictou County Branch), a Vice-President of Pictou County United Way for 12 years, President for Pictou County Mental Health Association for many years, a member of Pictou County Social Assistance Appeal Board for 2 years, and he was Secretary-Treasurer of the St Andrew’s Society of New Glasgow for 8 years.  He served on the Police Commission Association and on the New Glasgow Hospital Board.  Ted was a Justice of the Peace for 10 years and was recently appointed Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.  In addition to the many Service Clubs, Ted was a member of various social clubs.  He assisted with the Christmas Daddy program for many years.  He enjoyed singing with the local men’s barbershop choir and was the last President of the Gentleman Songsters before they disbanded.  He had an avid interest in drama and over the years he participated in various theatre groups.  Ted will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Catherine; by his three children and their spouses, Linda (Gary) Esling, New Glasgow, N.S.; Tim (Judy Lockhart) Teiman, Bible Hill, N.S.; and Cathy (Allan Bonvie) Teiman, Lower Sackville, N.S.; and by his 6 grandchildren, Heather Knowler (nee) Esling and Ryan Esling, Lauren and Christopher Teiman, Quentin and Justine Semenol Teiman, and by Ted’s two Great Granddaughters, Anya Esling and Hunter Knowler.  Ted’s love for his family and friends and dedication to his careers and his community depicts a life of honour.  Dad, you will always be in our hearts.  There will be a private family service at the graveside following his cremation. This is in accordance with Ted’s final wishes.
