Obituary of Lillian May MacKenzie
MacKENZIE, Lillian May (nee Johnson), passed away peacefully at Shiretown Nursing Home on Monday, Sept 3rd. Born in River John, she was a daughter of the late George and Sophia (Brown) Johnson. Lillian grew up and spent many years working on the family farm. She spent several years caring for the children of George and Nonie Murray of Pictou, and still shared a special bond with them. She later married her husband Sandy and moved to Pictou. Lillian was a tireless volunteer, always lending her time to her church, her lodge, and many other charities including the Red Cross. She was a proud member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou, where she was involved in the choir, AMS, Ladies aid, and also helped with the Kids of the Kingdom after school program. She joined the Rebekah Lodge in 1944 in River John, and moved to Pictou in 1955. She was a member for over 74 years and also received the merit jewel. Lillian is survived by her son, Don (Holly); daughter, Ann (Wendell) Myers; granddaughters, Leah (Mark) Lawlor and Hope Myers; great-granddaughter, Lillian Lawlor; brother, Earl; sisters, Jennie Barnard and Annie Scott; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander ‘Sandy’ Forbes MacKenzie; brothers, George and Gerald; sisters-in-law, Zelna, Chris, and sister-in-law and dear friend, Jessie; brothers-in-law, David Barnard and James Scott; nephew, David Johnson. Visitation will take place from 2-4 and 7-9PM Thursday, September 6th in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Princess Rebekah Lodge No. 4 Pictou will hold their service at 6:45PM Thursday. Memorial service will be held 11AM Friday, Sept 7th in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou with niece, Rev. Gail Johnson-Murdock officiating, assisted by Rev. Shelly Chandler. Interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Donations in Lillian’s memory can be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The family would like to thank the staff of Shiretown Nursing home for Lillian’s excellent care. ‘Grammie’ felt very at home with you.
