CORMIER, George
Pictou
Sadly, George Cormier or “Crutch” as he was fondly known, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 25. Born on April 1, 1938 in Pictou, George was a son of the late Alphonse and Eugenie Cormier. As a young boy growing up in Pictou, he enjoyed seeking out adventures with his buddies on St. Andrews Street, playing a wide array of sports, and racing to the after-school matinees at the old Capitol Theatre. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets where he had so many memorable excursions. As was common with many young men of his generation, George spent some of his young adult years in Ontario before returning to Pictou County where he worked at Michelin Tire. George was quite active in his community volunteering countless hours to Pictou Minor Hockey where he coached a number of teams and ran the “Beginners” program. He was officially recognized for his dedication in 1988. George also developed a keen interest in political and social causes through the 1970s and 80s. He was very much involved in the local labour movement of which he was tremendously proud. George loved the Blue Jays, old movies, music, dancing, reading, trips to Florida and visiting his sons in Edmonton and Norway. Never one to take life too seriously, he had a unique and wonderful sense of humour. Besides his parents, George is predeceased by his grandson, Oliver; his brother, Fred; and sisters, Adele, Aline, and Blanche. George is survived by his sister, Helen; sons, Steven (Edmonton), and Paul (Norway); and grandchildren, Fritz and Frida A celebration of life will be held 9:30 AM Friday October 11 at McLaren Funeral Home with Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the dedicated staff of the Aberdeen Hospital who provided so much care and comfort to our father.
