When Chris and I first moved to River John, Robbie was one of the first people we met and over time came to appreciate his humour and his interest in what we were up to, be it goats, gardens or broken fences.
I got to know Robbie a little more when I worked at the post office as he would come in to chat, tell stories, make a joke (usually about my goats).
My condolences to all his family and even though we didn’t see him often, I will miss seeing him around the village and stopping to chat for a minute.

The first time that I can remember meeting Robbie, I must have been in grade school. I remember being afraid because of his scars. I had never seen anyone who looked like he did. He is the most obvious example of "don't judge a book by its cover." After spending all the summers of my youth at the Cape causing trouble with the younger Robert Heighton, I grew to look forward to seeing that face because I knew what was behind it. A strong man, a loving husband, a father who lead by example, and a man that had the biggest heart. Every time that I rode by on my bicycle he would welcome me in to the camper and we would talk about anything and everything. As I got older, the visits to the cottage became few and far between, but the one constant was Robbie and Ann, who would bring biscuits and jam or lobster by our cottage just to make sure that we felt welcomed. That kind of kindness goes a long way. We would tell jokes and laugh over a drink, and it always felt like we were welcomed into the family. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Thank you Robbie, for being an example to me at such a young age of what it is to be a good man.

Robbie was a great guy to chat with along the wharf and was always curious what we were studying at the NSCC. He and a friend saved a crew of mine working near Salisbury Bight when their engine quit and there was a strong gale threatening to run them a ground. Robbie came to the rescue with his boat and towed them back to the wharf. One heck of a guy who would do anything to help you. He will certainly be missed and we at NSCC pass on our condolences to his family, especially his son, Robert, and the rest of the fishing community who spent a lot of time with him at the wharf. I will personally miss talking to him, something about him reminded me of my late father.

I would like to pass along sincere condolences to Robbie's family and extended family of the River John Fire department for their loss of a great man. Pretty amazing career to fish that long and be a firefighter for over 50 years. Good strong stock in that family. Rest easy Robbie, we'll take it from here.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of robbie. I was his neighbor for over 20 years and could not ask for a better person. After a snow storm, I would hear a noise and see that he was plowing out my driveway and always there if I needed him. One of my funny memories was when Ned and I had gotten a puppy and it got into everything so I made ned give him back to where we got him and then after visiting with robbie and bit of lemon gin, I felt bad and got the dog back:) That was all because of robbie making me feel bad with lots of laughter. Robbie will be missed by all that knew him. My deepest sympathy to all the family and friends.

Deepest sympathy to Robbie’s family. The passing of a loved on is always hard but during the Christmas season I’m sure makes it harder. I often spoke to Robbie at the Cape John wharf when I made a trip to RiverJohn visiting family during fishing season.
