My Condolences to the family and extended family of Elwin on his passing. I was visiting my grandsons at the time. I always enjoyed Elwin during my school days, and working with him as a fellow councillor for the Town of Pictou. We had lots of great talks and laughter. It goes without saying what a popular and great teacher he was. One of my favourites. He spoke fondly of his grandchildren and loved his family deeply. Elwin will be missed. Rest in Peace Elwin

My condolences to all of Elwin’s family. I have many fond memories of Elwin teaching History at the Academy in the late sixties. Elwin was one of my favourite teachers, and as I recall made my best marks from his teachings. He was an incredible teacher, and I am sure he will be missed by many. RIP Elwin.

Dear Ellen,
I'm very sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. You will miss him dearly.
My most fond memory of your Dad, was as a teacher, and most memorable, a chaperone for my class bus trip to New York. He made the effort of taking a handful of us to the site of John Lennon's apartment. We had to get up really early and take the subway. He walked so fast, that I nearly missed getting off the train on time...
We reminisced about that for years.
Thinking of you and your girls.
Love Gina Langille

Elwin first taught at Pictou Academy in 1960-61. This was my grade 12 year. He was my history teacher and did he teach a great course! He added a political element and had us use a 99 page summary of R. MacGregor Dawson's book on the Canadian Government. He arranged for Dr. John Stewart from the Political Science department at St F.X. to address one of our classes.
It was different to have him as a teacher as he was only a few years older than me. At one time we were alter boys together at Stella Maris. My thoughts and prayers for all the family. He will be missed.

Elwin Hemphill was my High School History teacher , many many years ago, in the late 60’s. He was a true intellectual and well respected among his peers and students alike! I remember him walking up and down the aisles too, as he gave the lesson sometimes. And, as soon as he entered the classroom to start the lesson, everybody took note and immediately stopped talking. He had control of his class, which speaks volumes for respect!
He always remembered everybody years and years later and would always have a friendly chat . The last time I saw and spoke to him was at the big PA anniversary and Reunion, which I attended with my friend Sharron a few years back.
My sincerest condolences to his family. —

A few years back, my husband (Gerald) and I were home for a visit and happened to walk up to the Academy. While gazing through a window, we were noticed by Mr. Hemphill who happened to be nearby. When we recognized him and reminded him that he was a teacher of years past, he offered to show us the interior of the school. Walking through the different rooms and climbing the worn stairs to the second floor, it brought back many good memories. Such a kind gesture of his.
Gerald and I send sincere condolences to his family.
Pictou has lost another great citizen!

Dear Ellen, Amy, Ashley and sisters, Jean, Joyce and Audrey,
Elizabeth and I are so sorry to learn of Uncle Elwin's passing. I especially appreciate his work on genealogy, which he loved to talk about and share new information with us. We last visited him this past summer when we were in town for Lobster Carnival. He was so proud of his family and always showed us all the photos in his room. We were very surprised that night to see him in the parade. He was so happy. Will will miss him!
Our love, thoughts and prayers will be with you.
With Deepest Sympathy,
Marc Hemphill and Elizabeth Crook

I was very saddened to hear of Elwin's passing but took comfort in having had the opportunity to have a lovely visit with him in September. He was in fine form that day reminiscing of his Pictou Academy days as a student & as a teacher, recalling many humorous incidences throughout those times. He even sang robustly an old cheerleading anthem of Pictou Academy that he & his colleagues would sing at school hockey games back in the days! He will be remembered by many as an avid cheerleader for Pictou Academy & the town of Pictou. I recall vividly his strong opposition to the possible dissolution of Pictou Academy when a newer, larger high school was introduced for the county. He was in the front seat to ensure that Pictou Academy's name would maintain its legislative charter & not be dissolved. Kudos to him for his strong stance pertaining to this matter. A true scholar and an active participant in extracurricular programs, kept him involved with his students, becoming a mentor to many of them. I was fortunate to be one of those, encouraging me to excel in my studies & use travel as a lifelong learning experience, which I have. He was instrumental in obtaining for me my summer job for 3 years during high school as a FINA gas attendant for his brother in law," Black Archie", prior to my entrance to nursing school; an experience filled with many laughs and introduction to some of Pictou's finest people, including a life long friendship with Jean, Archie's wife. My deepest condolences to you Ellen, Ashley, Amy& your families for your loss as well as to his sisters Jean, Audrey and Joyce & his extended family. He was so proud of all of you. A true Pictonian at heart, a dedicated father& grandfather, & a dear friend to many, he will be missed. R.I.P. Elwin

I’m sorry to hear that Elwin has passed. He was a great teacher and one of Pictou’s greatest promoters.
I just checked my PA yearbooks and was reminded of all the after-hour school activities volunteered by him. These include volleyball coach, drama, student council, driver’s ed, and grade 12 trips to Halifax to name a few. He was instrumental in helping the 1972 grade 12 class achieve its’ goal of a March-break trip to Ottawa. Also, he was responsible for getting PA started in the yearly inter-school quiz show Reach for the Top and over the years spent countless hours in practice sessions and arranging transportation and accommodations for that years’ team. One highlight was the 1973 team that won the provincial round and went to the Nationals in Ottawa. I was on the 1972 team, and whenever we met years later, the first thing he said to me was “I’ll always remember that show in Sydney and the look on the moderators’ face when he asked the question What is the 72nd element of the periodic table? and you answered Rawhalieum.” We always had a good laugh about that. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that it was probably Paul Currie or Greg MacDonald who provided that answer, not me. Thought I’d better set the record straight.
My condolences to Ellen and the rest of Elwin’s family.

Ron, dad had actually shared most of the memories you mentioned with me. You were certainly one of his favorite students for sure! I know how much pride dad had in the Reach for the Top Teams, and how much fun he had as a chaperone and coach for the PA teams. Thank you so much for sharing these memories. Please know how much we appreciate you reaching out to share your condolences. Take care.

To Ellen and family - Herb and I are so sorry to hear of your dad's passing! He certainly left his mark on the world, especially OUR little part of it, from all the students he taught to the work he did for the town of Pictou. His biggest mark, of course, was you and your family - so wonderful he lived to meet grandkids and great-grandkids! May all your memories of a life well lived and your times together comfort you and your family.

We have many fond memories of Elwin growing up and sharing school days. Did anyone know Elwin's nickname of "The Phantom" or hear him talk about "the Cloak"? We're sure some family members will remember. Elwin was very proud of Pictou and his school, Pictou Academy. He served on the Town Council and his time there was always directed toward the betterment of our town. Elwin was very intelligent with many interests. He will be missed. Sincere condolences to all his family..

Mr Hemphill was such a big part of life in high school, being my home room teacher, 2 years in a row. He was so smart reciting from memory our history lesson that we all copied down while he just paced up and down the rows. I remember being so amazed by him and the mystery of how his mind worked. In the years since then, he has remained the same any time I saw him, sharp as a tack one day at the VG when Mrs Hemphill was sick, remembered me and was so warm and wonderful. I have no doubt that in the heaven, he is just the same and he is already rallying everyone together for a Pictou Academy reunion. My condolences to you all. His was a life well lived.
