Obituary of Harvey MacGregor Henderson

HENDERSON, Harvey M. Toney River HENDERSON, Harvey MacGregor - 79, of Toney River, passed away peacefully May 16, 2023. He was a son of the late J. Anderson Henderson & Pearl (Johnson) Henderson. Harvey graduated from the Nova Scotia Teachers College in 1964 and went on to study at the University of Southern Maine. After returning to Nova Scotia he taught Tech-Ed, Social Studies and History at East Pictou Rural High, Halifax West, Pictou Academy, Sackville High, Nova Scotia Teachers College, West Pictou District High, River John, and Northumberland District High, until his retirement in 2004. He kept busy during retirement by providing predator protection services to farmers, running a dozer, being a “milk maid” at a local dairy farm, and “politic-ing”. An avid outdoorsman, Harvey could be found in the sugar bush in the spring, tending his raspberry canes and fruit trees in the summer, at his deer blind in the fall, and bird watching year round. He enjoyed fishing trips to Labrador with his friends and would trounce anybody at cards given the opportunity. He loved history, poetry, and politics, and loved to “pick people’s brains” and “spin a yarn” - always with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. Harvey is survived by his beloved baby sister, Effie Paul, Nepean, Ontario; sister-in-law, Margaret Henderson; and his nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers, Johnnie and Andy; sister, Vivian Smith; brothers-in-law, Blanchard Smith, Raymond Paul; and nephew, Kenneth Henderson. The family would like to thank the Palliative Care Team at the Aberdeen, the VON, EHS, his kind and generous neighbours in Scotsburn, the many healthcare workers who helped him in his last years, and his many close friends for their support. Cremation has taken place. Service will be held at Toney River Community Hall on Friday May 26th at 2pm with reception to follow.
