Obituary of Dorothy Ann MacIntosh

MacINTOSH, Dorothy A. Lyons Brook Dorothy Ann MacIntosh, 89 of Lyons Brook, Pictou County passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow on Tuesday December 6, 2022. Born September 19, 1933 she was a daughter of the late Charles and Henrietta (Blair) Downs of Waterside. Dorothy attended school at Pictou Academy, West Pictou District High School and the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro. She returned to West Pictou District High School as a teacher in 1965 for 35 years until her retirement. Her door was always open to students who wanted help. Dorothy always had a love for animals. She had many German Shepherds over the years and most recently “Holly” her beloved Sheltie. She and her husband along with son Larry showed Hackney Ponies around the Maritimes and later on at The Royal Winter Fair in Toronto where they won both the Canadian Harness pony and Hackney Pony Championships. Their beloved pony “Atta Boy” went on to become the 1991 World Junior Champion in Louisville Kentucky. Dorothy was a member of the West River Presbyterian Church in Durham, Pictou County. She was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. She was a member of the Princess Rebekah Lodge #4 Pictou where she served three terms as Noble Grand and later as District Deputy President. After retirement from teaching she and Jack started a craft shop where she taught toll painting and other crafts. She spent several years as chair of the Queen of the Fair pageant for the Pictou North Colchester Exhibition. Later in Life Dorothy took up writing books about family and life experiences. In 2020 Friesen Press published the first of two books she wrote, the most notable being The Old Violin and were sold on Amazon and at Chapters. Dorothy is survived by her son, Larry (Wendy), Dartmouth; son-in-law, Jack Sullivan, Calgary; grandchildren, Donald (Kelsie) Sullivan, Calgary; Paddy (Shirley) Sullivan, Calgary; Meaghan (Ryder) Marzyk, Dauphin MB and Conor (Rebecca) Sullivan, Calgary; two step-grandchildren, Alan (Dora) Poole, Halifax and Megan (Mike) Hamilton, Waterloo, Ontario; seven great-grandchildren, Ryland, Morgan, Willow, Ava, Farrin, Charlie and Rory; five step-great-grandchildren, Fayth, Carma and Jaxon Poole, Halifax; Logan and Rory Hamilton, Waterloo; sister, Patsy (Gerald) McCara, Waterside and Margaret (Lawrence) LeBlanc, Pictou, and brother, William Downs, Waterside; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Linda (Jack) Sullivan; sister, Joan (William) Roddick; sisters-in-law, Marion (Andrew) McCara and Isabelle (Levi) Swantee; special relatives, Orrin (Mary) Johnson. Arrangements have been entrusted to McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou, where the family will receive visitors on Friday, December 9 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 10 at 11:30 AM from the West River Presbyterian Church in Durham, officiated by Rev. Enjei Achah. Burial will follow in West Branch Cemetery.
