Obituary of Elizabeth Byers

BYERS (Rushton), M. Elizabeth Scotsburn Elizabeth Byers, 82, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2022, at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Elizabeth was born on October 14, 1940, in New Annan, Nova Scotia, to the late Aubrey and Annie (Miller) Rushton. She grew up in New Annan and after graduating from Tatamagouche High School, pursued her childhood dream of becoming a teacher, attending Nova Scotia Teachers College. Shortly after graduating she married the love of her life Edgar Byers and moved to Scotsburn. After 33 years of teaching, Elizabeth retired in 1994. Five years before she retired, she was granted a one-year sabbatical leave and attended Mount St. Vincent University where she received a Bachelor of Education. Elizabeth was a faithful member of Bethel Presbyterian church for 60 years and throughout her life served in many capacities including Elder, Clerk of Session, AMS, and Ladies Aid. She was an avid reader, and most down time was spent with a newspaper or a book. She had a talent for sewing which she used to make numerous hand stitched quilts, most of which she gifted and are treasured by all who received them. Beginning in 1974, Elizabeth started taking international trips to upgrade her teaching certification. These trips sparked a love for travel and throughout her life an annual trip was taken to locations throughout the world. Going for a 5 km walk was part of her daily routine for many years. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Donna (Rob) O’Brien; grandsons, Gabriel and Patrick; sisters, Mary Rushton, Edna Langille and Florence (Wayne) Cochrane and several nieces. In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Edgar (1975), and brothers, Aubrey, Frank, and Bill. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and community but we celebrate and honour a life fully lived. Funeral service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Scotsburn, on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at 2:00 pm with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Donations in memory of Elizabeth may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church.
