Dear Gwennie, Terri and Val (and families), I am just heartbroken to see this. And I can just imagine your pain and not having this wonderful man in your lives anymore. He was truly so lovely. Loved you all so much and so proud of all of your accomplishments. I loved when they came to visit my mum. She thought Gwennie was so lucky to have found such a wonderful partner, and oh how he loved your mum- just the way he looked at her! I know he and my mum and Pat are all doing the NY Times crossword all together again. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. love, Stacey (Atkinson) McDougall.

Dear Hallam:
" As virtuous men pass mildly away and whisper to their souls to go, while some sad friends do say the 'breath goes now" and some say, 'no'. So, let us melt and make no noise, no tear-floods or sigh-tempests move; ' twere profanation of our joys to tell the laity our love. Moving of the earth brings harms and fears; men reckon what it did and meant. But trepidation of the spheres, though greater far, is innocent. Dull sublunary lover's love, whose soul is sense, cannot admit absence because it doth remove those things which elemented it."
Those exquisite words from A Valediction Forbidding Mourning by John Donne express more eloquently than anything I could conjure our long trusting relationship over 50 years. Our walks and conversations ranged over the full gamut of philosophy, education, religion, psychology and local politics usually ending with, "Yeah, we got all the worlds problems solved, now!" But none of that compared, dear Hallam, to the personal support we provided to each other and for that I am both deeply grateful and honoured. Though I could not be there in person, being constrained by my family circumstances, I was present in spirit.
As for our separation, as Donne exclaimed, "endure yet not a breach, but an expansion like gold to airy thinness beat".

I am so sad to hear about Art's passing and my heart is with Gwennie and his beloved family. I have so many memories of gatherings at Faye's house and all over Pictou - and Art is there in many of them - with and without Gwennie. He always had a big smile and a friendly word to share and I've always had - and will continue to have - a real soft spot in my heart for dear Art.
Karel and I send our sincere condolences to all who loved him.

With sincere sympathy to Gwen and family. My memories of Art are his years of commitment to the Rotary plays. He worked so tirelessly with cast members to perfect each one of the productions through the years. I was blessed to be a part of a few productions and often reflect back on them. "His patience was admirable" Rest in Peace Art, you will be greatly missed by so many!

Gwen, Terri, Val and family: I was saddened to read of your loss. Art was a wonderful man; his passing will be a significant loss to
the town of Pictou in which he dedicated so much of his life. Art made certain to visit and have a chat whether at Pictou Academy or Dr. McCulloch. I always looked forward to his easy-going banter. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Art was truly a man of faith. His church and church community was a treasured part of his life. He loved his family and so enjoyed telling me what each member was doing. His years as a teacher and principal were a joy to him. I worked with him and always felt his support, as did the children whose lives he touched. May he Rest In Peace.

I am so sorry to hear of Art's passing. He was one of my heroes and i feel fortunate to have known him. He inspired his students to think and i have always been grateful to him for that. I moved away from Pictou many years ago but each time i returned home, i found myself going past Art and Gwen's place hoping to see them. When Art was outside he would greet me with a warm smile and a hearty "Mr. McCarville!". He always had time to chat and catch up. My condolences go out to Art's wonderful family. I know i speak for thousands of students who were lucky enough to learn from your husband, dad and grampie. He was one of a kind.

How lucky I was to have attended Patterson Junior High School and to have Mr.MacDonald as my grade 8 home room teacher.and a friend forever. OH the giggles of a junior high class that were heard along with the cry " I think Mr. MacDonald likes Miss Smith.". It was some LIKE, turned to 60 plus years of love. Art was always encouraging and supportive of individuals and town projects. I will miss our occasional chats when we met, not without some political bantering!!. My thoughts and prayers to Gwen. Gwen was a grade 8 teacher for me also. She was part of Art's success.

Art was a strong support to me during my decade of service at Pictou United Church. I especially remember his willingness to teach a Junior High Sunday School Class when others were somewhat threatened by that age group. He and I acted in several Rotary plays, notably, he played Col. Pickering while I Prof. Higgins. We had many scenes together and enjoyed bouncing off each other. My sympathy to Gwen, Terri and Val as you adjust to this new reality. I hold you in my heart.
