Allan Hoar posted a condolence
Thursday, August 25, 2022
Hello, I just found out about Allan’s passing One and 1/2 years ago. My name is Allan Hoar. I lived with my siblings for one year at 30 College Rd. which is directly across the street from Allan and his parents and sister. When I was seven years old, Alan would generously allow me to learn to ride his bicycle up and down the sidewalk. I could relate several stories about Alan during his younger years. I remember swimming with Alan and another person in the Salmon River behind my grandfather‘s house. AndI remember one instance when Alan went swimming during recess while the whole school watch from the top of the riverbank. He was skinny-dipping of course! In later years I played with his basketball team against a team in Pictou county.I remember Allan as a good person and fun but not a choir boy :-)

Hello Gail. So sorry to get your note about Alan's passing. Alan was one of my last cousins on the Rees side of the family from Lachine Quebec. So glad that a number of years ago Avis and I looked up "my long lost cousin" while on a cross Canada road trip in our RV from our home in Victoria BC. (Sorry about the tire marks in your front lawn).
To have kept in touch with the two of you has left me with some grand memories.

Alan and I had a long basketball history with each other. He officiated games I played during my Stellarton Warrior years, and later when I began my officiating career, we shared many laughs during the countless phone calls and in gym visits between us. Alan and Gail were both very supportive of Mary and I. We enjoyed the referee Christmas parties they hosted for many years, and the delicious berries from summer visits. Alan’s memory will be strong forever in our local basketball community. Rest In Peace my friend!

To Gail, Marion and Alana,
Very very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband and father...better known to me and many as Mr. Jankov. What an amazing tribute put forth in the obituary reflecting his busy and interesting time on this earth. It was unbelievable how generous he was with his time. Gym class with Mr. Jankov was one thing, but the introduction of fun sports to the kids beyond regular programming was unbelievable. Badminton clinics, wrestling, floor hockey at noon and after school, table tennis, gymnastics, track and field. He used to take a couple of lads with him to flag the sidelines in the Fall when he officiated High School soccer in the upper towns and that was a big deal to get picked for the job. His noon hour was his private time.....he had his lunch box and newspaper....in his small gym office....but if you needed him for something...he was there. Thank you Alan for stepping up to the plate during your long and storied teaching career for your time and availability for the boys and girls of our town....back in the day.

To the Jankov family,
My condolences to you. Mr. Jankov gave us so many great stories, stories that we still all tell to one another whenever my old buddies and I get together. Whether it was Mr. Jankov teaching us Greco-Roman wrestling or basketball (use the backboard, no dream shots) the stories are endless. It is pretty cool that a man who taught us all 30 plus years ago still makes us smile when we think about him. I'll never forget him calling me 'Sunkist' one day when I showed up with orange juice around my lips or calling me out for wearing yellow converse high tops (where did you get those 'banana' shoes?). The best comment you could get from Mr. Jankov though was when you did something well, was a a quick approving glance, followed by a, "Not bad boy. Not bad at all." Thanks for the memories and the smiles.

Gail and family: So sorry to hear of Alan's passing. Some of my favourite memories of my younger days are of the friendships I made spending summers on Caribou Island with Alan, John McCarthy, and Bobby Ferguson. The simple things that make lasting friendships and stay with you, just hanging out, swimming off the raft, and our, almost daily, clam and quahog bakes on the beach in front of McCarthy's cottage. My deepest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.

On behalf of Alan's other family at the Caribou District Fire Department please know that we all share in the loss. You've shared Alan with us since before we had a truck or a building and he has helped us build something strong which will outlast us all. To have spent all the time volunteering that you both have done over the years, whether through music or the countless hours at the fire hall, it shows a love for people and the community which is appreciated and will be missed.
