Obituary of Percy Herbert Steele

STEELE, Percy H. Pictou Percy Herbert Steele - 82. It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of the late Percy Herbert Steele announce his peaceful passing at home on June 19th, 2020 with his soulmate and loving wife of 59 years, and loved ones by his side. Percy was born to the late Phillip and Laura (Farrell) Steele in Georgetown Prince Edward Island on May 14th 1938. He was the last of their surviving children and predeceased by his sisters, Lois (Lester) Fanning, Laverne (Ronnie) Battist; and brothers, Chesel (Eva), Garfield (Lillian), Lester (Sandra), Billy (Helen), and Johnny Steele. Loving husband, father, brother, son, grandfather, uncle and friend, Percy was proud to live his life in Pictou where he spent many years of his life doting on his devoted wife and best friend Theresa (Thorne); and their four beautiful daughters, Belinda (Lester) Steele of Pictou, Terri-Lee (Randy) MacLellan of River John, Leisa Steele of Pictou, and Trina (Ross) Steele, also of Pictou. He was a proud and adoring husband and father and will be terribly missed by all of his girls, his nieces and nephews and all those who knew him. From his earlier days in the grocery business to a skilled and experienced welder at the Pictou Shipyard, he held many titles. He also took great pride in his green thumb and was a talented gardener extraordinaire. Percy was well known as a proud lifetime Toronto Maple Leafs devoted number one fan, (and defender!) He worked hard and somehow managed to pass his heartfelt love of the Leafs down to a few of the family and he took great joy in that accomplishment. He loved his ‘Hockey Nights in Canada’ but of all the titles Percy held his favourite by far was the well earned title of “Papa”. He was never happier than when he had one of his beloved babies on his knee or in his presence. “Papa” will be greatly missed by all eight of his grandchildren, (Rachelle, Samantha, Alyssa, Nadine, Randi-Lee, Ryan, Shelby and Riley) who were blessed to call him theirs, and his ten (soon to be eleven) great-grandchildren, (Reese, Kayleigh, Abbeigh, Jackson, Audrey-Lee, Carter, Borden, Tucker, Spencer, Raiden & baby to be Theo) who will never forget his welcoming smile or his contagious laughter. The family would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank-you to Percy’s long time doctor and friend, Dr. Randy Burrill. He thought the world of you and so do we, we couldn’t be more grateful for you and your commitment to him and his care. We’d also like to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the help and support from the Palliative Care team at the Aberdeen Hospital and Pictou County VON. We cannot express how thankful we are to be able to have had him home with his family at this time and you all helped make this possible. In respect to Percy’s wishes there will be no funeral service and a private family celebration of life will take place at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to McLaren Funeral Service of Pictou.
