Obituary of Jessie W. Dorie
It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that the family of Jessie Dorie (Porter), of Pictou, announce her passing at the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou on December 10, 2017. Jessie was born in Westville, Pictou County, on May 21, 1928, the second daughter of James and Jessie (MacKenzie) Porter. Jessie and her husband, Charlie Dorie belonged to the New Horizons Club in Pictou where they enjoyed playing cards and bowling. As well, they frequented all the Church suppers in the county and Jessie was a big supporter of the pantry tables. They loved to entertain family and friends and Jessie was known by all as a great cook. Once her children were older, Jessie worked at a number of different jobs, the Tourist Bureau, Caribou, the Braeside Inn, Pictou; and, was in charge of the lunchroom at Pictou Academy and Pictou Elementary. She was Returning Officer - Pictou West for many years and was an ardent supporter of the PC Party. She especially enjoyed her job at the Hector Arena - there would be very few young people from the ‘70’s and ‘80’s who wouldn’t have a story to tell about Jessie at the rink. Jessie made the Oddfellows Home her home and was cared for by the staff as if they were her family. With Charlie joining her a short time later, they had a wonderful life together at the home, participating in many activities or just talking with the residents and staff. In addition to her husband, Charlie, Jessie is survived by daughter, Brenda; son, Blaine (Candace); and granddaughter, Jessica. She was predeceased by her brother, James; and sister, Margaret Nelson Porter. Jessie’s funeral service will be held at 11 AM Thursday, December 14 from Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Following the service, Jessie’s life will be celebrated at the Oddfellows Home, 143 Norway Point Road, Pictou. Bring your memories and stories about Jessie. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oddfellows Home Resident Council Fund. Jessie would want us to thank Dr. Randy Burrill, he appreciated her Jessie-isms. A special thank you to all the staff of the Oddfellows Home for their care and compassion shown to Jessie and to her family in such a professional way. www.mclarenfuneral.ca
